If I’m being honest, my mornings lately have been a bit of a mess. Between life throwing me curveballs and trying to stay on top of everything, I’ve felt like I’m in a constant state of rush. To say I’ve been slacking on routines would be an understatement. Most mornings, I grab whatever outfit is clean, toss food to my dog, and race out the door with a half-finished coffee. It’s exhausting, and I knew something had to change.
Recently, I’ve had a moment to catch my breath, and I’m realizing that a solid morning routine isn’t a luxury — it’s a necessity. I need calm, not chaos. So, I’m making a pivot. These five steps are my plan to bring peace, productivity, and maybe even a little joy back into my mornings.
1. Set Up for Success the Night Before
I used to think I didn’t have time to “prep the night before.” But honestly? I’m saving way more time by doing it. Picking out an outfit (or at least narrowing it down to two options) means I’m not scrambling through my closet 10 minutes before I leave. I also make sure my breakfast is prepped and review my schedule for the next day. Waking up already knowing what’s next feels like such a win.
My New Nightly Routine:
Pick out an outfit (or at least two options because the weather happens).
Prep breakfast (overnight oats or just having another ready-to-go option).
Review my calendar and to-do list for the next day.
Check the weather (because I’ve learned the hard way that rain can ruin a plan).
My Pivot: I’m treating my future self like a friend. If I can make things easier for her in the morning, I will do it.
2. Make Mornings About Intention, Not Panic
When you wake up feeling like you're already behind, it sets a stressful tone for the whole day. I’ve been living this, and I’m over it. Instead of diving straight into emails or notifications, I start with a moment of calm. Sometimes it’s just deep breathing or a quick pep talk to myself while I walk my dog.
Taking my dog for a short walk first thing helps me slow down. It’s a moment for both of us to get fresh air and stretch our legs. I’ve started using this time to think about one question: What’s one thing I can do today that will make me feel accomplished by the end of it? It’s simple, but it works.
My New Morning Ritual:
Avoid checking email or social media for the first 30 minutes.
Walk the dog while thinking about my "One Big Thing" for the day.
Take 3 deep breaths before I start any work.
My Pivot: I’m done waking up in “rush mode.” My mornings are for me — not for email, social media, or other people’s priorities.
3. Feed My Mind Before I Feed My Inbox
If I’m being honest, my first instinct in the morning is to check my phone. But I’ve noticed it leaves me feeling frazzled before I’ve even had breakfast. So, I’m pivoting. Instead of starting with notifications, I’m starting with a book. I’m a big reader, and it only takes 10-15 minutes to spark fresh ideas. Sometimes I read a chapter of a self-improvement book, and sometimes it’s fiction just for fun.
My New Plan:
Phone-free mornings: No email, no social media until after breakfast.
Read a book for 10-15 minutes (fiction, self-help, or business strategy).
If time is tight, I’ll listen to an audiobook while walking the dog.
My Pivot: My phone isn’t the boss of me. I’m feeding my mind with intention — not notifications.
4. Fuel My Body with Energy, Not Just Coffee
No shade to coffee (I still love it), but I’ve realized I can’t survive on caffeine alone. I used to grab a random granola bar or just skip breakfast entirely. Then I’d crash by mid-morning. Not cute.
Now, I’m making sure I start with water first and something that fuels me for more than 30 minutes. I’m talking smoothies, fruit, or something with protein. If I don’t have time to prep it in the morning, I’ll do it the night before. My dog eats when I eat, so I use that time to get both of us fed.
My New Breakfast Strategy:
Water first, coffee second.
Quick, healthy breakfasts like smoothies, fruit, or overnight oats.
While my dog eats, I make sure I’m eating too.
My Pivot: No more surviving on coffee alone. I need to start properly fueling my body.
5. Plan My Day Like a Boss (Not a Juggler)
I used to wake up and just wing it. Big mistake. My to-do list would grow out of control, and I’d end the day feeling like I accomplished nothing. So, I’m shifting to a “Top 3” system. Every morning, I choose the 3 most important things I need to do that day. Not 10. Three. And I focus on knocking those out before everything else.
I also check my schedule the night before, so I don’t have any “surprise” meetings or last-minute deadlines. I’m treating my day like a CEO would — with intention, strategy, and a plan.
My New Game Plan:
List my Top 3 tasks every morning.
Start with the hardest (or most important) task first.
Check my calendar the night before.
My Pivot: No more winging it. I’m running my day like a boss, not a juggler.
Final Thoughts:
I’m still figuring it out, but I know one thing: A calm morning doesn’t just happen — you have to create it. I’m done letting my mornings control me. By setting up the night before, slowing down my mornings, and focusing on intention (not panic), I’m creating a routine that works for me.
Yes, life happens. Things come up. But with these five strategies in place, I feel like I’m starting my day with clarity, energy, and a little peace. And honestly? That’s priceless.
Which of these changes speaks to you the most? Let me know — I’d love to hear how you’re pivoting your mornings, too!
